On Tuesday, March 12th, The Salon Professional Academy of Holland branched out and had 4 staff members attend a conference with other Michigan colleges. However, we were there to represent trade schools and the beauty industry! Our goal: Advocating for our students, and all Trade school students.
We got to meet with 6 different State Representatives and State Senators! At times, it was even one on one meetings. It was absolutely amazing! We brought light to the hour changes coming, the unassigned hours being decreased by a big amount for the Cosmetology program, and that our students don’t have access to the same funding and scholarships and grants that others do while attending a Community College or a University. Every person we talked to wanted to know more, wanted to understand, and were so receptive to our concerns.
Pictured here is owner and Executive Director Nikol Taylor, Director of Operations Jenna Fuller, Financial Aid Advisor Martha Schultz, and Admissions Coordinator Kacie Grady. Each was able to meet with State Representatives and step out of their comfort zone!
A common thing we heard: “Wow, that’s amazing what you do for the students…they would never receive that kind of support and attention at a college or University!” That shows the importance of funding and education for trade school students.
Here’s to making a difference, being the voice for skilled trades, and hoping to move mountains to create more opportunities for our industry! Your voice matters!
